Juneteenth National Freedom Day

In this day of instant communication, it is difficult to realize that news of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863 was not widely known in Texas until June 19, 1865. On that date the people learned not only of their freedom granted by the Emancipation Proclamation but also that the Civil War had ended.

It truly was an occasion to celebrate. It reminds us to make the most of the freedom and opportunity we have in our lives today. Celebrations of Juneteenth are growing in every area. Each year finds more and more community celebrations. Use the web to find celebrations in your community.

Celebrate Juneteenth with an easy ground beef Texas style barbeque. Complete the celebration with your favorite potato salad, homemade lemonade, and a fresh-fruit cobbler.
