Pathmark Multicultural Arts Festival Event

The Seventh Principle Drum & Dance Ensemble is a contemporary African dance company founded in 1992 by artistic director Candace M. Hundley-Kamate. The Seventh Principle is Swahili for "Imani" which is derived from the Seventh Principle of Kwanzaa, an African-American cultural holiday. The Company fuses traditional African, modern and contemporary movement styles such as hip-hop, freestyle, street, and popular dance, into an innovative approach to performance. Through dance and music, The Seventh Principle connects past and present cultures through education, African traditions, and the creative fusion of the African and American cultures. Their dance stories include a diverse range of narratives that portray history and experiences from a Pan-African perspective. The ensemble performs the drumbeats, calls and captivating movements created over centuries in Africa and the Caribbean. Festival audiences love their flamboyant costumes, authentic instruments and inspiring, athletic leaps and dances. The Company's main objective is to heighten awareness of African dance and culture through expression of this unique art form. They present positive images of culture and history from an African perspective, encourage multi-cultural sensitivity and awareness through African-based culture and to promote cross-cultural understanding.

Pathmark Multicultural Arts Festival Day for Kids

The K Company and Jr. K from the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx adds its own colorful Latin flavor to the Festival. The dancers’ colorfully choreographed salsa, merengue, mambo-style and jazz routines have already been performed for New Jersey Nets and New York Knicks fans, with appearances at Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium and the Waldorf Astoria. The dancers, all teens, are selected annually from auditions of the more than 12,000 students who take part in this outstanding Bronx after-school program. Many “graduates” have gone on to dance and theater careers.

Pathmark Caribbean American Heritage Day

This day honors National Caribbean American Heritage Month, a celebration first made official by Congress and the president in 2006. Nowhere on the continent is Caribbean heritage more widely celebrated than Brooklyn, home to America’s best steel pan orchestras, calypso singers and West Indian dancers.

Women in Steel is an innovative all-female steel band was founded and is directed by Claudette Baptiste, with drummers from Barbados, Granada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. Recent tours have taken the band to Antigua and the World Steel Drum Festival in Trinidad. When not on tour, Women in Steel maintains a strong big sister program to tutor and mentor young girls.

Founded in 1999 under the direction of Magnus Scanterbury, Pan Ambassadors has reached the highest standards of Caribbean performance, drawing young people to the magic of steel band and supporting them with intensive training.

Ebonè Roots Dance & Drum Theater also celebrates the performance arts of the Caribbean Islands, Africa, Brazil and Central America. Before bringing the African diaspora and all its color to audiences across the Metro area, children and young adults chosen for the group are immersed in training, with studies in dance, music, creative writing and drama.
